Hosted by Salem Maritime National Historic Site in cooperation with Essex Heritage and Eastern National, the Salem Maritime Festival features live music and dance, harbor cruises, interactive programs, arts, crafts, and more! This year I will once again be under a tent on beautiful Pickering Wharf, painting a mermaid figurehead.
Festival times are Saturday, August 4 from 10:00am to 8:45pm and Sunday, August 5 from 11:00am to 4:00pm
Salem Arts Association is proud to announce “Land and Sea”, an exhibition celebrating New England’s rich maritime history, beautiful coastline, and historic connection to the sea. Artist members will be showing 75 landscapes and seascapes featuring their unique interpretations of beautiful New England.
My submission is Boston Bridges, a 16″ x 20″ acrylic painting of the Zakim and Charlestown Bridges. I liked the contrast of old and new, which is so much a part of Boston’s architecture. The other thing that appealed to me about this scene is the contrast of the natural ocean so close to the modern city.
The opening reception will be held Friday, August 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served. The show will run August 3 through September 30 at The Bridge at 211, 211 Bridge St., Salem, MA. Please use the Ash Street entrance. There is a nearby parking lot (the old Almy’s lot) as well as some street parking.
Our guest juror Betsy Hoffman is the Associate Director of the Marblehead Arts Association. She holds a BA in Art History from Middlebury College and a Diploma in Painting and Printmaking from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has worked as a creative professional in corporate advertising and has experience in the field of the cultural non-profit. Betsy enjoys writing about art and has also been an Art enrichment teacher in the Marblehead public schools.
I am happy to have my work included in a new place (for me!). My painting of the Boston skyline was juried in to “(un)TITLED Summer Show”, It will be on display until September 5, 2018, at Grace Chapel Art Gallery, 59 Worthen Road, Lexington, MA, 781-698-8106, www.artgallery@grace.org.

Boston Woodturning creates one of a kind hand crafted fine art as well as usable utilitarian pieces from a variety of local wood. Artisan/owner, Tommy Gagnon, was recently featured in Yankee Magazine; and his shop has become a place recognized for its exquisite creations.
I am honored that Tommy exhibits an array of my large and small paintings of trees in his beautiful shop, set among his gorgeous turned wood creations. Shown: Forest River Afternoon, acrylic, 12″ x 30″.
Boston Woodturning also offers private lessons and group classes to anyone who wants to learn the fine art of woodturning all tools and supplies are provided for the duration of the lesson/class. The gallery is located on the corner of Artists’ Row and New Derby Street in Salem, Massachusetts.
The Swampscott Art Association Summer Show will take place this year at The Gallery at Grosvenor Park from Saturday, July 7 until Thursday, July 26. The show features a wide variety of mediums and subjects by the members of the association. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, July 8 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
My painting in the show was done on location at Cox Reservation in Essex on a perfect August day. Tom and I had a lovely lunch at J.T. Farnam’s, then went out back to the Cox where I painted and Tom sat back in his lounge chair and read. It is called Essex August, acrylic, 12″ x 24″.
The Marblehead Festival of Arts will take place from June 30 through July 4 this year. It features 10 visual art exhibits comprised of original work by artists in Essex County. Artwork is selected by judges with expertise and knowledge in their field of judging, and awards are distributed in each exhibit category. Visitors are also invited to vote for their favorite work at each exhibit. Most of the artwork displayed in the exhibits is available for sale. I am excited to have three pieces of art chosen to be part of this year’s Festival, in addition to my work on display for Painting the Town and the Marblehead Arts Assoc. Members’ Show.
At the Painting Exhibit, enjoy a juried exhibit of original artwork in oil, ink, acrylic or watercolor. Classic media for today’s contemporary artists. My accepted painting is Seasons Tree, acrylic 30″ x 40″. The Drawing Exhibit is a juried exhibit of original drawings in pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, conté crayon and other media. My drawing is titled “Determination”, pastel & ink, 16″ x 20″ matted and framed. The Painting and Drawing exhibits will be on display at Abbot Hall, 188 Washington Street.
The Senior Art Exhibit, is a non-juried exhibit of original work comprising crafts, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking and sculpture by persons 65 years of age and older. Creativity knows no boundaries. My painting is “Fireworks”, acrylic, 16″ x 20″ and is a view of the Lynn/Swampscott fireworks viewed from Nahant Beach. The Senior show is at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead.
Plein Air painting is a French expression for painting outdoors. These fresh, often rapid works can capture the essence of a scene and the weather with a unique charm, unlike the more careful studies produced in a studio.
On Friday, June 29th, Plein aire artists will seek out strategic locations throughout Marblehead and begin capturing the town’s scenic beauty on canvas and paper. Feel free to roam the town and observe artists creating art. That afternoon or the next morning, the artists turn in their completed, framed works for inclusion in the Painting-the-Town Exhibit.
This year, I chose to paint at lovely Devereux Beach. I love the colorful display of beach umbrellas, children playing and lots of people coming and going. My finished piece, “Devereux Beach Day”, acrylic, 12″ x 24″ will remind me of a picture perfect New England day.
The public is invited to meet the artists, view the exhibit, and cast ballots to determine the People’s Choice Award winner.
The Marblehead Arts Association’s Summer Member Exhibit will be on display from June 23 through August 5, 2018. This is a non-juried show of members’ work which will be on view all through the MAA gallery at The Hooper Mansion, 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead, MA. There will be ballots available for viewers to vote for their favorite piece for a People’s Choice Award to be announced at the end of the exhibit.
The Opening Reception will take place Thursday, June 28, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
My entry is a mixed media piece called Power, 16″ x 20″, matted and framed. It shows rainbow colored electric plugs dancing across a sheet of vellum paper. It was the inspiration for the electric light box I painted at Reilly Plaza in Salem, MA.

The City of Peabody has chosen my design for their Outside the Box project to beautify the electrical boxes in Peabody Square. My design of teapots and teacups and saucers was inspired by the Peabody Historical Society’s annual event, Mrs. Felton’s Tea. They are cheerful and fun and brought a smile to many a passerby.
The box is located on Main Street in the little garden at the entryway to a small municipal parking lot beside Walgreen’s.
The Beebe Estate Gallery will exhibit the artwork of Sheila Farren Billings and Robert Marcellino for the month of June 2018. The two-artist show will be open Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sheila will be at the gallery to answer questions on June 9 and 16 and Bob will be there on June 1 and 23. The opening reception will occur on Friday, June 1, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Sheila will be showing a mix of new artwork and old favorites. Her exhibit includes her stylized paintings of trees, plein air paintings of New England locations and scenes inspired by her travel photos and lots of surprises. When she is in the gallery, Sheila will bring along her bins of unframed original art, reproductions of her art, and small paintings and notecards.
Bob paints with a special technique which involves mixing oil paint with beeswax. This gives his work a soft, dreamlike quality which complements his richly colored paintings of marshes, seascapes and florals. Bob’s work is unapologetically romantic and peaceful. During his gallery hours, Bob will demonstrate his technique and his small paintings, cards and prints will be available.
