Member Show: 3/4 – 4/30/22

The Swampscott Art Association is delighted to announce that our first exhibit “in a million years”, because of COVID, will be held at the Senior Center in Swampscott -March 4 – April 30! Members of the association will share their best works in a dazzling assortment of styles, mediums, and subjects.

My entry in the show is Snow Berry Cardinal, acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, 8″ x 10″. Cardinals are such a joy to watch and listen to any time, but they are especially lovely against the snow on winter days. The design on this painting continues around the edges of the extra deep canvas. The painting is wired for hanging, and the depth of the canvas also allows it to stand on its own on a shelf.

The exhibit can be seen at the Swampscott Senior Center Gallery which is located in the back of Swampscott High School. The Opening Reception will be held Friday, March 4, 12 noon until 2:00 p.m.

Duality Exhibit: 2/11-3/26/22

The GALA Call for Art described the theme for their current show this way:

“In this exhibit we are looking for submissions that question or describe duality.
There are always two sides to every story. Most people have two sides to their personality. You might want to suppress the so-called “bad” side. This leads to repression. Are you angry, sad, disappointed in life, love, etc. What are your conflicts and how do you resolve them? How do you find balance in your life and find joy? At certain points in our lives we have to decide: Should I leave or stay? Should I change my profession? Should I leave a relationship? We are conflicted. How do we resolve these conflicts? There are also broader entry-points to the theme of duality such as: yin and yang, night and day, good and evil, right and wrong, hot and cold, which you could explore. Let’s see how you work this out as a visual artist. Express yourself and it might resolve some issues or connect with your viewer about a deep iconic duality.”

Could there be a more timely theme for today’s crazy world? Artwork in the exhibit will include photographs, painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, and electronic art. All mediums are included: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and more. My entry in the exhibit is titled Cadillac Mountaintop View. It was done on location at Acadia National Park one sunny day that turned cloudy in the middle of my painting. So the painting shows the duality of the weather as I worked!

The Opening Reception will be held Friday, February 11th, 5:30pm – 7:30pm. And the exhibit ends Thursday, March 24th. Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA), 25 Exchange Street, Lynn, MA 01901, 617-909-9211

Artoberfest Exhibit: 9/3 – 11/6/21

Salem Arts Association invited local artist to explore Salem’s history with witchcraft, religion, and Halloween. The resulting exhibition, Artoberfest, represents their diverse interpretations of the theme.

I was delighted that my painting, Purple Twilight (acrylic, 16″ x 20″) was selected to be part of the show. My painting is a nod to magic and mystery. It will be interesting to see how other artists interpret the theme!

When you are visiting the Salem Arts Association’s beautiful seaside gallery, do not forget the visit our shop which features exquisite one-of-a-kind items created by our artists.

The Opening Reception on Friday, September 3 is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Salem Art Association, 159 Derby Street, Salem, MA 01970. Masks are required in Salem, MA.

Summer Member Exhibit 2021

The Marblehead Arts Association Summer Member Exhibit will be on view from August 7 through September 19, 2021. Members will share their interpretation of the theme, Elements.

My entry in the exhibit is my acrylic painting, Boston Skyline. The painting was inspired by the stunning view of the skyline presented to me when I was stuck in traffic driving into Boston one morning. The bright sunlight created strong shadows and the hard lines of the buildings against the blue sky and soft clouds really appealed to me. I took a picture with my cell phone and began work on the painting when I (finally!) got home. The traffic was real! The tall buildings against the sky gave me the feeling of Air, perfect for the Elements theme.

Hooper Mansion is located at 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead, MA 01945. Hours of operation are Wednesdays through Sundays noon to 5:00 p.m. Call 781-631-2608 or visit www.marbleheadarts.org for more information.

Tides of Life 7/3 – 8/28/21

For the 15th year, Salem Arts Association is presenting a members’ exhibition inspired by a show at Peabody Essex Museum. This year’s exhibit is titled, Tides of Life and gets inspiration from the PEM exhibit “In American Waters”. Local artists came up with imaginative creations showing how the sea is a reflection of American culture and environment and their own personal and psychological meditations on its beauty, violence, poetry and transformative power. The show will be on display from July 3 through August 28, 2021 at the Salem Arts Association Gallery.

I’m thrilled that my painting, Marblehead Harbor, 12″x36″, acrylic has been juried into this exhibit! This painting was done en plein air on a drizzly July day before the morning mist had lifted. I was painting under a protective canopy at Devereux Beach in Marblehead MA, and had originally gone to Devereaux with the idea of using the roof to protect me from the sun. I had planned to paint a view of the beach with all the colorful towels and umbrellas, but the rainy weather made me change my plan. From the same spot, I turned around and painted a view of the harbor in all its foggy glory.

The exhibit is on display at Salem Arts Association Gallery, 159 Derby Street, Salem, MA, right beside Derby Wharf. Gallery hours are Saturdays & Sundays from noon to 6:00 p.m.

Summer Member Exhibit 7/3 – 8/1/21

Marblehead Arts Association is excited to present the Summer Member Exhibit now through August 1. With 5 galleries of MAA juried artist members and 1 galley devoted to our Plein air paintings, there is something here for everyone. As with all our shows, you can find all the works online, but MAA also welcomes everyone to come in person.

My painting in the show is Four Seasons, a 4 panel acrylic on canvas. Each panel is 12 inches wide by 24 inches high, the total size is 48 inches wide by 24 inches high, $800. The background is done in subtle mottled metallic paint: copper, gold, bronze, silver. Because of the metallics, the painting gets a different look through the day and evening as the light changes. Four Seasons was inspired by my love for trees during all our New England seasons, and the Asian panels I have visited at the Peabody Essex Museum.

The show can be found online, but it’s much more fun to come in person to 8 Hooper St., Marblehead, Massachusetts. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Holiday Showcase 11/14-12/20/20 Third Prize

Salem Arts Association is proud to present the Holiday Showcase in our beautiful seaside galleries!

My entry is called Sweet Tidings and I was thrilled that it was chosen for 3rd Prize in the show. This painting was the cover for Harbor Sweets’ annual Chocolate Christmas Calendar box in 2018. Yum! (acrylic, 18×18″ framed, $400.) The Guest Juror was Julie Barry, who for over a decade worked as the Director of Community Arts for the City of Cambridge’s Arts Council, and is now Director of Arts and Culture for the City of Salem, MA. Here is what she had to say about my painting:

“This work is chock-full of joyful attention to detail.   Again, with this piece we see another case of ‘the more you look the more you see’!  I stood in front of the work for more than 10 minutes exploring the scene, with its tiny delicate brush strokes, and I am still not sure I found all the hidden gems there in: a parade of animals, loosed form the pet store by a mischievous elf, on a holiday romp through the snow; other little elves peeking out here and there; the family dancing around a tree…  All of this brought so much joy and delight to see and discover – and I think it is safe to say that we could all use a bit of holiday cheer!”

The show will run from Nov 14 through Dec. 20, 2020. Gallery Hours: Saturdays and Sundays noon-6pm. To visit our virtual gallery and shop, visit salemarts.org!

SAA is at 159 Derby St., Salem, MA right beside Derby Wharf and the Friendship.
