Let Us Remember

My newest utility box is finished and you can see it at the corner of Essex Street and Danvers Road in Swampscott, MA. The box is located at a beautiful monument to the memory of Jared Raymond, a native son of Swampscott, who perished in battle in Iraq at the age of 20 years old. He gave his life for his country and made the ultimate sacrifice.

The design for the utility box mural was inspired by the World War I poem, In Flanders Fields by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it on May 3, 1915 after presiding over the funeral of a fallen soldier. I was deeply touched by this poem when I first heard it from my grandfather, a World War I veteran. The red poppies were everywhere when I was a girl, worn by people to remember those who died to help keep our country safe for democracy.

The utility box was on the grounds of a beautiful monument that was built in memory of Jared Raymond, and I felt it did not do the sacred and solemn location justice with its plain beige exterior. I wanted to do more, and the Town of Swampscott okayed my plan. The design shows rolling hills of poppies with the ocean in the background, a nod to Swampscott’s seaside location where Jared grew up. The U.S. flag flies proudly on both sides of the box, flying over the flags representing the branches of the U.S. military: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, and also the POW/MIA flag. Thus, it honors not only Jared, but also all the brave veterans who gave their all to protect us.

Garden/Art Walk

ReachArts of Swampscott is once again running their Garden/Art Walk this weekend, Sat. June 29, 11-3:00, rain date June 30. There are many gardens for you to stroll through all throughout the town. Visit reacharts.org to find out all the details: including maps of the 3 segments of the Walk, activities, van routes, raffles, and sponsors. There is also some information about some of the artists and gardeners taking part in the event.

The Garden/Art Walk is large, and is divided into 3 segments. I shall have my easel set up to paint en plein air in the garden of the Swampscott Art Association President in the 1:00-3:00pm Beach Rose segment of the tour on Puritan Lane. Members of the Swampscott Art Association will have their paintings and matted prints on display. My contribution to the exhibit is King’s Beach Seawall, acrylic on stretched canvas, 12″ x 24″. I was inspired to create this painting after being dazzled by the magnificent light reflecting off the ocean by the seawall one day when I was taking a brisk walk along the shore in Swampscott. The contrasting shadows, splashing waves, and particularly dramatic clouds made me pull out my camera and take photographs to capture the scene so I could paint it later at home.

Registry Members Exhibit

ReachArts Celebrates the Work of its Artist Registry Members with a Spring Gallery Exhibition May 6-7, 2023.

This inaugural Exhibition will feature the work of 35 ReachArts Members. My entry in the show is titled King’s Beach Sea Wall, a 10″ x 20″ framed acrylic painting. It was painted from my photograph of the view one breezy November afternoon just as the sun began to break through the clouds. I loved the way the sun shone brightly on the horizon.

Artist Registry Members will be voting for “Artist’s Choice” and awards will be presented to the winning work within Traditional Painting, Abstract Painting, Photography, Mixed Media/Sculpture and Applied Art (Jewelry, Ceramics).
