Punto Urban Art Museum

The vision was to create a world class urban arts district in Salem’s Point Neighborhood, one that embraces its rich immigrant and architectural history and present a dynamic opportunity for the neighborhood’s future. A block party celebrating the unveiling of the murals will be held on September 30, 2017, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. along Peabody Street.

The Punto Urban Art Museum has two primary goals: to create a beautiful, uplifting environment for Point residents, particularly for children to grow up in, and to break down the invisible divide between the Point and the rest of Salem by inviting visitors into the Point to experience world-class art first-hand.

Twenty years ago, North Shore CDC produced two murals which have long been points of pride in the Point neighborhood. Two years ago, North Shore CDC worked with the Point Neighborhood Association, the City of Salem and Salem-raised and South Florida-based artist Ruben Ubiera on a crosswalk mural project. In 2017, North Shore CDC has worked with 12 artists to create 15 large-scale outdoor murals, as well as 12 large-scale wall murals within North Shore CDC’s office loft, also in the Point Neighborhood.By creating a walkable, curated arts district within three blocks with dozens of murals in the Point Neighborhood, the district will be readily accessible to all that downtown Salem already has to offer to over a million tourists per year. Bringing a fraction of those visitors to the Point neighborhood stands to be a transformative economic development boom to immigrant-owned businesses. It will also begin to break down the invisible barriers between the Point Neighborhood and the rest of Salem by creating a beautiful, walkable destination within the Point Neighborhood for people to visit.

I was so happy to be chosen to create an 8′ x 8′ mural along a wall of over 20 murals the same size along Peabody Street in The Point, off of Lafayette Street. My mural represents the warmth, heart and music brought to our country by the many immigrants who have come to our shores.

Fall Show Danvers Art Association

The Danvers Art Association Fall Art Show reception will take place Friday evening, September 29, 7:00 p.m.

I was delighted when two of my paintings were chosen for awards: 2nd place in professional acrylic division for Devereaux Morning, 12″ x 24″, acrylic on canvas. I did this painting on location in Marblehead on a foggy morning in early July when it was so cold that my hands got numb! Another submission, Gables Roof, 6″ x 6″, acrylic on canvas, won a second place ribbon in the Mini Painting category. It was painted on the grounds of The House of the Seven Gables this past June, and is an unusual view of just some gables and a portion of the roof of the historic building.

The show will remain up for several weeks at DAA Gallery 62, 105 Elliot Street, on Route 62, Danvers, MA. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Artists’ Row Mural

Just in time for Halloween photos of family and friends! Come down to Artists’ Row just off of Derby Street in historic Salem, Massachusetts. Visit the artisan shops, get a bite to eat and take a photo of your face peeking through my mural outside of Tommy Gagnon’s Boston Woodturning Gallery.

It was a lot of fun to paint this on location and have a chance to chat with so many visitors from all over the world!

Faint of Art — Sept. 1 till Oct. 29, 2017

“Faint of Art”, the Salem Art Association annual PEM inspirational show, allows SAA artists to interpret concepts of fear, suspense, and horror. Inspired by the Peabody Essex Museum’s exhibition of “It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection”.

One of my mixed media pieces, Nevermore (16″ x 20″) has been juried into the show. It is a combination of acrylic paint and collaged cut paper presented on a mottled metallic background. This artwork was inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, The Raven, a favorite of mine.

The show has been juried by Lydia Gordon, Assistant Curator for Exhibitions and Research at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Prior to joining PEM, Gordon worked for the Society of Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago and as a Curatorial Fellow for the department of Exhibitions and Exhibitions Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has contributed to several Chicago-based exhibitions at SAIC’s Sullivan Galleries, Hyde Park Art Center, and Comfort Station, Logan Square. Additionally, she has held the position of Art Loan Manager at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, where she organized the series New Media | Fresh Paint, showcasing contemporary artists living and working in New England.

Gordon earned her BA in Art Administration from Simmons College in 2010 and her Dual MA in Art History, Theory and Criticism, Art Administration & Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017. A chapter of her MA thesis will appear in essay form in the upcoming publication Inappropriate Bodies, ed. Rachel Epp Buller and Charles Reeve (Demeter Press, 2018). Her research interests include the histories of modernisms, post-structuralist theory, and contemporary art.

Salem Arts Association is located at 211 Bridge St., Salem, a historic red brick building which once housed The Universalist Unitarian Church. There is a public parking lot on Church Street.

Figurehead Painting Demo at Old Ironsides 7/23/17

On July 23, 2017, the USS Constitution, fondly called Old Ironsides, was returned to the waters of Boston after 2 years of restoration. I was invited by the National Park Service to demonstrate the art of figurehead painting for the attendees.

In addition to my display, there were many other nautical demonstrations and performances. These included a knot tying tent, choruses singing sea chanteys, a group of people in historic costumes camping at the shipyard, and many other events. It was a jolly time, packed with people interested in history and in enjoying a lovely evening.

Uncommon Threads — SAA July 1 to Aug. 27, 2017

NOT your Grandmother’s Sewing Circle!

July 1 through August 27, 2017

Opening Reception: Friday July 7 from 5-7 pm.

Salem Arts Association presents “Uncommon Threads”, an exhibition that redefines the use of fibers in art. Times have past on the quilting of old. In this exhibition we challenge the artists to discover new inspirations using fibers, fabrics, textiles of any kind, and inventive weaving.  My entry is a quilted wall hanging using cloth, beads, shells, etc. It was done in honor of my youngest granddaughter’s birth — so it WAS actually her grandmother’s sewing circle!

Fiber art refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. It focuses on the materials and on the manual labor on the part of the artist as part of the works’ significance, and prioritizes aesthetic value over utility.

Salem Arts Galleries and Shop are located in “The Bridge at 211” at 211 Bridge Street. The gallery entrance is located on Ash st.

Regular hours are Saturdays and Sundays, Noon until 6:00 PM.
