Kids’ Art Workshop 4/20/23

Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA) will be offering art workshops for kids during the April vacation 2023. My workshop is called Creating Op Art and will be held on April 20, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Kids from 8-13 will be able to try their hands at Op Art, an eye-popping style that uses optical illusions to make a two dimensional painting appear almost 3-D. During the 2-1/2 hour workshop kids will learn some tricks to get them started with this busy, dizzy type of art. Each participant will go home with their own matted Op Art creation.

Spring Exhibit 4/1-5/8/23

Finally Spring! The Swampscott Arts Association is celebrating with a Spring Exhibit from April 1 until May 8, 2023. The event will be shown in the gallery at the Swampscott Senior Center, 200R Essex Street, Swampscott, MA — right behind Swampscott High School. Lots of free parking!

The Opening Reception for the show will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at 2:00. Light refreshments will be served, and it is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

My artwork for the show is titled Little Teapot. It is made from cut paper; the teapot is cut from handmade paper featuring pressed flowers from Provence in France. I found the paper when I there on a Mediterranean cruise with my daughter. What a lovely place.

I hope you will be able to visit the show and enjoy the spring stylings of local artists.

People’s Choice Award

The artwork of local artists will be on display at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers at the Spring Awakening Exhibit. The show is sponsored by the Danvers Art Association.

My entry in the exhibit is Purple Twilight, a fanciful painting of a spring evening under a full moon at twilight. The trees are starting to show their delicate leaves, and the whole scene is reflected in the quiet water. Many thanks to all the folks who voted to choose my painting for the People’s Choice Award! I am deeply honored and grateful.

This painting was made especially for my talented late friend, Tommy Gagnon, who was the proprietor of Boston Woodturning at Artists’ Row in Salem. Tommy’s shop was a gem. To set off his exquisite wooden creations, he liked to show the work of local artists, including my many variations of trees. He liked the contrast of the earth tones of his wooden pieces with my jewel-toned paintings. Purple was the only color missing from his gallery section, he asked me to do a purple/ magenta piece, and here it is!

I hope my painting warms your heart and will inspire you to visit my website, www.SheilaBillings.com

The show will run from the opening reception on March 11, 2023, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. until it closes on April 22, 2023. The library is located at 15 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923. Hours are Mondays through Thursdays 9 a.m to 9 p.m

Welcome Spring 3/12-4/30/23

Spring is just around the corner and who isn’t looking forward to longer days, shorter nights, and a whiff of fragrance in the air? Come and lose yourself for a while in interpretive images of emerging life and new energy by artists and photographers of the Swampscott Art Association. All you stand to lose are the winter doldrums!

I have two paintings in this exhibit. H7G Garden, acrylic, 8” x 10” framed, was painted en plein air in the lovely gardens of The House of the Seven Gables in Salem, MA. It is a wonderful place to paint because as I work I meet visitors from all over the world. The other painting accepted into the show is Honeysuckle, 6” x 6”, acrylic on canvas. It was done in my own garden on a warm summer day last year. I am lucky that my neighbor’s gorgeous honeysuckle vine drapes over my fence, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.

Swampscott Art Association began in the 1940’s when a group of well-known professional artists came together at the Swampscott Public Library to meet and create exhibits. Today the group has grown to over 70 members. Membership is non-juried and open to local artists and photographers to encourage exhibits for their work. The SAA seeks to foster and encourage art in Swampscott and the surrounding communities through camaraderie, workshops, and exhibits for both the artists and those who appreciate art.

Green Gallery Exhibit

An eclectic mix of subjects, mediums, sizes, and styles has resulted in an amazing alchemy of sixty paintings — all painted predominantly in the color green! The Slow River Gallery presents Green Gallery for the Green Belt which will benefit The Essex County Greenbelt, and I am excited that my painting Summer Afternoon has been juried into the show.

Summer Afternoon is a 12″ x 36″ acrylic painting on stretched canvas which I painted en plein air at the lovely Forest River Park in Salem, MA. On summer afternoons as the sun sinks below the tree crowns, long shadows stretch over the velvety green hills and slopes. It is a colorful and peaceful time to enjoy the beauty of this sea side park.

The gallery opening will be a community event with art, music, and light refreshments; it will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 4:00 till 7:00 p.m. The Greenbelt will make remarks about their organization at 5:00 p.m.

Slow River Studio is located at 17 Main Street, Topsfield, MA 01983. The gallery is open when studio classes are in session, generally Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. They will also open the gallery for viewing the Green exhibit from 10:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 and Sunday, March 25.

Tell Me A Story

Salem Arts Association is excited to open the 2023 exhibition schedule with a themed showcase of Member Artists. Tell Me a Story: Myths, Narrative, Dreams, and Fairy Tales features works of visual storytelling in each artists’ chosen medium and style. Artists think beyond the traditional definition of “narrative art” and embrace the diverse ways in which we all “tell our stories.”

I am pleased to have my original screen print accepted into the exhibit. It is titled Time Travelers, and was inspired by a photograph of my daughter as a little girl when she first met the Heiau Ku at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. I imagined the tales they could tell each other. My 11″ x 14″ screen print is the second of a run of seven prints and is done in two ink colors, brown and black on white rag paper.

The opening reception is on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Salem Arts Association Gallery at 159 Derby Street, Salem, MA 01970. All are invited. The exhibit will run from March 4 until April 1, 2023.

Small Works Show

GALA, the Galleries at Lynn Arts, www.galleriesatlynnarts.org, has selected the paintings for their Small Works Exhibit and 2 of mine will be included! The show will run from February 3 until March 16, 2023 at their beautiful galleries, 25 Exchange Street, Lynn, MA 01901. The opening reception happens on Friday, February 3 from 5:30 till 7:30. The event is free and open to the public and donations are gratefully accepted to help support the organization.

One of my paintings is Writer’s Block, acrylic, 6″ x 6″ x 1.5″. This one was inspired by painter’s block! I was thinking about “What to Paint?” and was doodling on a piece of paper, using the Op Art style I love. The wavy lines and pools of ink reminded me of penmanship lessons when I was in grade 4.

If you can believe it, we actually used old fashioned writing pens with nibs which we dipped in an inkwell built into the top of our school desks. The biggest, strongest eighth grade boys (never girls — it was back in the bad old days— got to walk up and down the aisles with glass gallon jugs of ink; then they would pour that blue-black ink into those tiny inkwells. No wonder we had dark tiled floors and very ink-stained desks. The cool hues in my painting were inspired by those blue stains.

The size of Writers’ Block makes it a fun addition to any decor; it is wired to hang, and the depth of the canvas allows it to stand unsupported on a shelf — or on your writing desk.

The second painting in the show is Snow Penguins, acrylic, 8″ x 10″. It was inspired by an animal documentary I watched on Netflix. I guess that elevates “Netflix and Chill” to kind of a nerdy yet creative place.

Looking at all those penguins standing around with absolutely nothing but snow and ice as far as their bright little shoe-button eyes could see, all cooperating with each other to stay warm and mind their babies ……. I started to think about them having a little non-Netflix fun and working together to build snowmen. No! Snow Penguins! I know, I have to get out more.

As a former kindergarten teacher and the illustrator of a few children’s books, I love to paint in a fun, happy, colorful style. Snow Penguins would be fun in any child’s room. Or let it warm up your winter decor. I hope that my little painting warms your heart!

Swampscott Art Show

The Swampscott Arts Association (SAA) will be exhibiting the assorted works of its members in the Shrage Gallery of the Hooper Mansion of the Marblehead Arts Association. Started in the 1940s when a group of well-known professional artists came together at the Swampscott Public Library to meet and create exhibits, the SAA currently has about 70 members. Each year the SAA offers non-juried shows for artists and photographers as well as workshops and demonstrations.

My painting, Great Horned Owl (acrylic, 16″ x 20″) has been accepted into the exhibit. Great Horned Owl was painted during a snow storm while I looked at the view out my back window. The snowflakes were falling so thickly that the trees right outside my yard were indistinct gray outlines. As I was painting, one of the great horned owls which lives in the woods behind my house swooped right past my window. I had been hearing his calls for months and it was a thrill to finally see him! Watching that powerful predator in flight made me wonder what the pair of little chickadees were thinking as they sat in the upper branches of the tree on the right.

This exhibit runs from January 14 until February 26, 2023. The Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Hooper Mansion is located at 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead, MA.

Joy of Winter Show

Danvers Art Association will present their Joy of Winter Show at the beautiful Peabody Institute Library of Danvers — commonly called the Danvers Public Library at 15 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923. The exhibit will be on display from Saturday, November 19 until December 24, 2022.

All the artwork in the show will be winter themed! My two paintings in the show are Frosty Dawn, acrylic on canvas, 12″ x 24″; Sweet Tidings, acrylic on wood panel, 17″x17″ framed.

Sweet Tidings is the original artwork used for the 2018 Harbor Sweets annual chocolate Advent calendar, a treat eagerly awaited by chocolate lovers. Each little door on the candy box holds a delightful treat from Harbor Sweets. Collecting these calendars is a holiday tradition for many families.

My 2018 cover is a Beacon Hill style scene with lots of Salem and Harbor Sweets references for their loyal fans to find. The diverse characters in the painting reflect the diversity of Harbor Sweets’ hometown, Salem, MA.

Frosty Dawn was inspired by the snowy view out my Salem window right after a blizzard. Because an artist can control her world when painting, it does not show the parked cars, telephone poles, and houses of my congested neighborhood. My neighbor’s backyard skating rink became the pond.

The blue jays were really there balancing on the snow-clad shrubs, and making a lovely contrast with the new snowfall and the glorious pink sunset. With art, I can revitalize the world the way I would like it to be!

Member Showcase 11/18-12/18/22

The Holiday art fun continues! The Salem Art Association presents the Member Showcase. Members were invited to show some of their best work and there is no theme, so the show is an array of art in all different styles, subjects, and mediums. The show will be exhibited from November 18 until December 18, 2022 when the shop goes on hiatus until March.

I have two pieces of artwork in the Member Showcase: Snowy Gables, an original screen print, 12″ round, $250; and Great Horned Owl, acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20″, $500. These can be seen in the association’s second floor galleries.

Snowy Gables is one in a series of about 8 (I sold them out of order I’m afraid!) and the one in this show is AP, an Artist’s Pull. This screen print is done in two colors of ink on 100% rag paper, and is displayed in a round wooden frame, wired to hang. This artwork was inspired by the many antique houses in Salem MA with their steep roofs that look so cozy covered in snow, sparkling under the moonlight.

Great Horned Owl was painted during a blizzard last winter as I stood looking out my window onto the conservation area behind my house. The snow was so heavy that I could only see the closest trees clearly, everything in the background faded into the falling snowflakes. All autumn I had been able to hear the hoots of the Great Horned Owls that live in the woods, and I even had seen their babies in the nest. But I had never seen the adult owl flying. While I was painting, one of the owls swooped right by me, its feathers a perfect blend with the subdued winter colors of the trees. So this painting is a souvenir of a thrilling painting experience.
