Fall Show — 2nd Place Award

Danvers Art Association is once more hosting an open art show at the Peabody Library of Danvers. The show includes the work of members of the art association as well as artwork from members of the community. The opening reception for the exhibit was held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 and I was very pleased to be awarded second place.

Once again, we are grateful to DAA member, Jim Morrocco, for doing a magnificent job organizing and hanging the exhibit. And thanks as well to Noelle Boc, the Library Director, for judging the show and speaking so eloquently about each winning painting at the art reception.

The exhibit will close on Sunday October 22, 2023. Coastal Blues Exhibit

Here’s some exciting news! A brand new gallery will be opening in Swampscott. Coastal Collective, 434 Humphrey Street, Swampscott, MA will host their first exhibit in this lovely seaside space. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 14 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public. I am delighted to have my work included in this show.

The theme of the show is Coastal Blues, and artists are invited to interpret that idea in any way this wish. I chose to take it literally this time. My painting, King’s Beach Seawall (acrylic, 12″ x 22″ framed) is both coastal and blue!

One day while taking a brisk walk on a chilly, windy day I was met with a stunning sight. The sun was breaking through the interesting cloud formations and making the horizon sparkle bright white. It was also casting dramatic shadows on the sea wall. I captured the image with my camera and went straight home to paint it.

This exhibit will be on display through November. When you visit Coastal Collective you will see not only the Coastal Blue Exhibit, but also other work by local artists: pottery, housewares, jewelry and much more.

Swampscott Fall Show

The Swampscott Art Association is proud to present the Fall Member Show. The members of the association have been invited to share their best work, any subject, any medium. The show will be a treat.

My painting in the exhibit is titled King’s Beach Lights. It is done in acrylic on a 16″ x 20″ gallery wrapped canvas. The painting was inspired one very dark night when I was driving past King’s Beach in Swampscott. No moon or stars were visible, but the inky black water was illuminated by the lights of streetlights and passing automobiles. Each wave was delicately edged with reflections. and the low hanging clouds were glowing with reflected light. I stopped my car and took pictures trying to catch the parade of lapping waves.

There will be an artists’ reception on Sunday, September 10 at 2:00 p.m. which is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and the public will have a chance to meet and talk with many of the artists displaying their work. The exhibit will hang until October 26 at the Swampscott Senior Center located behind the high school at 200 Essex Street, Swampscott, MA.

Inspired By Word Exhibit

Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA) offers a new exhibit of work inspired by written, sung, and spoken words. My entry in the show was inspired by one of my favorite songs, Deep Purple. I have always liked the soft, relaxing sound of the music and the romantic lyrics which were written in the 1930s and covered by many musicians since then. My painting, Purple Twilight captures the magic of a warm spring evening as the sun sets and the full moon rises, reflecting in the gentle ripples of the water and glowing through the emerging leaves on the trees. It is done in acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas and is 16″ x 20″.

Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA) presents an opening reception Friday, September 1 from 5:30-7:30 for “Inspired by Word” Exhibit. GALA openings are open to the public and offer beautiful art, good conversation with interesting people, music, food, and usually other surprises. The show runs from September 1 through October 22, 2023. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays and Sundays by appointment. Summer Member Showcase

The Salem Arts Association #SalemArts is presenting the Summer Member Showcase at their beautiful seaside galleries. The opening reception will be held on Friday, August 3 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The opening reception will feature live music by musical guest Brian Cogger performing original compositions. There will be refreshments and an opportunity to visit the SAA Gallery Shop stocked with exquisite one-of-a-kind handmade creations by the artists.

My painting in the exhibit is Emerald Woods, acrylic on canvas, 16″ x 20″. This was done en plein air and is a view into the conservation area behind my house. In the early morning, the sun shines through the leaves, making them glow. I had to work fast before the sun rose too high and the light completely changed. The woods are an ever-changing subject for my paintings!

The artists were free to use any medium, and any subject for this exhibit and there is a huge array of different styles.

Salem Arts Association gallery is located at 159 Derby Street and has lovely ocean views of Pickering Wharf. The exhibit will run until September 9.

Becoming Exhibit

From the opening reception August 4 until September 9, the Salem Arts Association will feature an exhibit that features artwork inspired by artists’ transformative journeys and acts of becoming.

My drawing juried into the show is titled Celtic Peacocks, pen and colored pencil, 14″ x 18″ matted and framed. It is done in the style of the Book of Kells, and consists of intricate, meticulous knots and bright colors reminiscent of the work done by ancient Irish monks in their stone towers.

The exhibit is open to artists from the community as well as members of the Salem Arts Association. The reception will be held on Friday, August 4 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Salem Arts Association Gallery right beside historic Pickering Wharf on 159 Derby Street, Salem, MA. #SalemArts The reception will include live music by Brian Cogger performing his original compositions, refreshments, and is free and open to the public.

Regular gallery hours are noon until 6:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. And when you are visiting our gallery exhibits, do not forget to check out the Gallery Shop on the first floor. Wonder & Whimsy 7/21-8/19/23

Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA) have invited member artists to exhibit work that fits the theme, Wonder & Whimsy: Portal to the Fey Realm. They sought artwork hat represented powerful feelings and deep yearnings, as well as subjects that are highly prized in the Fey Realm such as mushrooms, flowers, etc.

I was happy to have three paintings juried into the exhibit, all very small acrylic paintings which fit the fairy theme: Moondance, Fairy Garden, and Honeysuckles.

Moondance, acrylic, 6 x 6” This happy little painting was inspired by Van Morrison’s song of the same name. It has always been a favorite of mine; when I hear it I am transported to a dark, moonlit summer night where anything wonderful can happen, where fairies dance on trees and the summer breeze makes me want to dance too.

Fairy Garden, acrylic, 6”x 6”. My garden is one of my favorite places, and I spend many hours there planting flowers and tending to them. It seems the fairies also spend hours there because I constantly find lovely compositions of graceful ferns, mysterious mushrooms, and tiny wildflowers popping up overnight. Here is one, I was inspired to go outside and paint.

Honeysuckles, acrylic, 6” x 6”. It has been said that good fences make good neighbors. Well, I guess it is true because my good neighbor is growing the most gorgeous honeysuckle vine that drapes over her fence into my garden. This magnificent plant attracts legions of butterflies and hummingbirds giving endless pleasure to me and my grandchildren. They youngest ones believe that fairies sew dresses from the petals, and what fashion-conscious fairy wouldn’t do so? I was inspired to create this little outside in my garden one fine day.

The exhibit will run from the opening reception on Friday, July 21, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. until August 19, 2023.

The reception is open to the public, donations are requested to help support the work of GALA in the community. There will be food and music and all-round merriment! 

As a nonprofit, GALA depends on your generous support to continually produce exceptional art events that benefit artists, businesses, students, visitors, and the City of Lynn. Something amazing has been created here two years ago! $5, $10,  $15 … anything helps.

Summer Splendor 7/1-8/12/23

The Danvers Art Association is hosting an exhibit of summer inspired art at the historic Peabody Institute Library of Danvers. The show will open on Saturday, July 1, with a public reception from 2-4 p.m., and will run through August 12 .  It will be in the Standring Room on the first floor off the library’s lobby (the former periodical room).  Non-members, as well as Art Association members will exhibit their work.

I am delighted that my painting, Devereux Beach Umbrellas, has been accepted into the show. This painting (acrylic, 12″ x 24″) was done on the beach as part of the 2022 Paint the Town plein air event during the Marblehead Festival of Arts. It was a perfect summer day, hot and sunny and the beach was full of people enjoying the shore under a garden of colorful beach umbrellas. The water and sky were bright Caribbean colors instead of the usual New England look. I stood under the gazebo and happily painted until a birthday party took over and I had to complete my painting in the sun. Whew! I could have used my own umbrella!

The show will be judged by Noelle Boc, the popular library director, with ribbons for first, second and third place, as well as honorable mentions. Winning pieces will be announced at the reception. With a keen artistic eye, she does a great job sharing an array of thoughts about the finer elements that make a winning piece extra special.  For the fourth time, a People’s Choice Award will be given in addition to the individual place ribbons. This award will represent the piece voted most liked by the public showcasing the artist and his or her work. The public is invited to view all the artwork throughout the duration of the show and vote for a piece that truly impresses them. Voting will take place at the library. This winning piece and artist will be revealed at the end of the show with a special

Summer Members Show 6/24-8/6/23

The Marblehead Arts Association features the work of its Artist Members for the height of the summer season, and during the popular Marblehead Festival of Arts. With multiple galleries of MAA juried artist members, there is something for everyone.

My entry in the show is titled Starship Tripping. This happy little painting is an 11″ x 14″ acrylic that is “just for the fun of it”. Whimsical little green people are gathering on a little planet, all bright colors contrasting against the black outer space sky. This painting was the inspiration for the room sized outer space mural I did at the North Shore Children’s Museum.

The show will run from June 24 until August 6, 2023 at Marblehead Art Association’s lovely gallery on 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead, MA.

Inspired by PEM 6/23-7/29/23

Salem Arts Association members reflect on the Shelagh Keeley: Drawn to Place exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum. The exhibition features artwork that inspired by the past, present, and future of Salem, the North Shore, and Massachusetts; SAA members’ relationship to this area; and by the PEM and Phillips Library collections, the collections of local cultural institutions and homes, and the legendary people and families who called the North Shore their home. 

My artwork juried into the exhibition is a mixed media piece, Stairway to Heaven, 20″ x 24″ matted and framed. It is meant to illustrate one of my favorite rock & roll classics by Led Zeppelin. A charcoal drawing showing the hips and legs of a skeleton ascends a staircase made of cut outs from music to the song. The drawings in Shelagh Keeley’s installation at the PEM employ charcoal and subdued colors which remind me of this piece.

The exhibit will be on display at Salem Arts Association’s beautiful seaside gallery, 159 Derby Street, Salem, MA. The show runs from the opening reception on Friday, June 23 until July 29, 2023.
