Salem Arts Assoc. Member Show

The Grand Opening of the Salem Arts Association’s beautiful new gallery at 159 Derby Street, Salem, MA (right beside Derby Wharf and the Friendship) was postponed because of the global pandemic, but will finally happen on June 20 until August 28, 2020. Gallery hours are 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Masks and social distancing is required, of course.

My entry in the Salem Art Association Member Exhibit is Birch Mountain, acrylic, 12″x36″ vertical, $400. It was inspired by a beautiful drive through New Hampshire at the height of foliage season. I just love birch trees all year, but in the autumn with their bright yellow leaves, they are stunning.

SAA members have worked tirelessly to get all the items in the shop online as well, and I have lots of original art, prints, mini paintings, etc. there.

Best of Show — DAA Virtual Spring Show 2020

Check out The Danvers Art Association Virtual Spring Show 2020 website (www.thedanversart.org), on FaceBook (The Danvers Art Association), and on Instagram (@thedanversartassociation). Because of the global pandemic, we will not have in-person viewings of the show.

I was delighted that my painting, Summer Afternoon was awarded Best in Show! Acrylic, 12″ x 36″, $385.

My painting was done en plein air at Forest River Park in Salem in the late afternoon. I have always loved the way the light caresses the velvety green grass at the park in the late afternoons. And the glow from the sun through the leaves feels almost like sun through the stained glass windows of a church.

Variations — Feb. 8 to March 8, 2020

Here’s what the MAA has to say about their new exhibit!

“Variations…. it’s what keeps outlooks fresh and interesting.

For close to a century the Marblehead Arts Association has exhibited the works of artists from throughout New England in the six galleries of its historic 1728 mansion home. All works have been judged and prizes in Fine Arts, Photography and craft categories will be awarded at the opening receptionThere will be ballots available for visitors to cast votes for their favorite piece with a People’s Choice Award to be announced at the close of the exhibit.

We were excited to have received a record number of entries this year with hundreds of submissions from artists throughout New England!”

I was thrilled to have my mixed media artwork, Seabreeze, chosen to be part of the Variations exhibit. Seabreeze incorporates my watercolor painting of Ten Pound Island in Gloucester, seen through the paper sculpture window of a seaside house. The paper sculpture is all done in white paper and was inspired by all the white houses I saw on a visit I made to the Greek Island of Mykonos with my daughter. We wondered what the blue Mediterranean would look like through the windows of those white homes. Seabreeze is framed in a shadow box, 14″ x 14″.

The Variations exhibit will be open to view from February 8 through March 8, 2020. The opening reception was held Sunday, Feb. 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at MAA’s Hooper Mansion, 8 Hooper St., Marblehead. Hours are Tuesdays through Fridays and Sundays, noon to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed Mondays.

Juried Member Showcase 11/15 to 12/5/2019

GALA, The Galleries at Lynn Arts is presenting the juried artwork of its members from November 15 until December 5, 2019. Each member is exhibiting up to three creations. The opening reception is on Friday, November 15. From 5:30 p.m until 6:00 there is an artist Meet-and-Greet event. Then the reception will continue until 8:oo p.m. There will be food, fellowship and lots art to view.

Three of my paintings were juried into the show:

Autumn Marsh, acrylic, 12″x24″. This was painted one autumn day with a group of my friends at Jones River marsh in Gloucester. It was fun to see the differences in our paintings though we all were looking at the same view.

Free Birds, acrylic, 14″ x 11″. This painting has a background of mottled metallic acrylic paint: coppers, bronzes and golds.

(Shown) Marblehead Autumn, acrylic, 8″ x 10″. I painted this at Crocker Park in Marblehead one morning with the ocean and the warm sun at my back.

GALA is located at 25 Exchange Street, Lynn, MA.

Member Showcase 11/8 – 12/15/2019

Salem Arts Association is excited to close our 2019 exhibition schedule with a showcase of member artwork. All current Salem Arts members were invited to bring in our best work to show the community what we have to offer in all of our diverse styles and artists disciplines.

I have 5 entries in the show:

All Year Long, acrylic, 14″ x 30″ framed. This painting was inspired by a Chinese panel I saw at the Peabody Essex Museum. I tried to replicate the metallic background with copper, gold and bronze acrylic paint.

November, Salem; acrylic, 16″x20″. This painting is the view of my neighbors’ houses and leafless trees out my kitchen window a couple of years ago. The yellow house is now repainted gray, and the white house’s roof is now rust with solar panels!

Essex Marsh, acrylic, 4″ x 12″. This painting is a tiny part of a larger painting I did of Cox Marsh in Essex, on location.

(Shown) Salem Trolley 1910, acrylic, 9″ x 12″. This painting is one of the illustrations I did for In the Middle written by Virginia Frazier. I remember riding of these growing up (not in Salem) and the driver would have to stop the trolley to get out and rehook the car to the cable when we went over some bumps in the road.

The Swing, acrylic, 8″ x 8″. I know the rubber swings in kids’ parks are safer, but I still miss the comfort of the old wooden swings they had when I was a little girl. You could swing on these all afternoon.

The opening reception is on Friday, November 8, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Music! Refreshments! And, of course, lots of art.

Salem Art Association is located at The Bridge at 211, 211 Bridge Street, Salem, MA 01970. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. Email us at Info@SalemArts.org, or call  SAA at 978-745-4850.
